“He’s our dark horse”, is how Jeremy Warmsley’s bosses at Transgressive Records described their young troubadour. Having watched Jeremy Warmsley for the first time earlier this year, and left wondering was this what watching a young Tom Waits negotiate the smoky bar circuit of 1970’s New York was like, I couldn’t help but think that this was the darkest of horses. A young man possessing the kind of talent that warrants a career blessed with more luck than the greatly underestimated Ed Harcourt, or indeed become- whisper it now- the new Tom Waits.


Zealous words for a young man who- as of Crossthepond’s eighth podcast- is still one month away from releasing his first album. Yet anyone who was present on the aforementioned crispy January evening at London’s Barfly, or at any other Jeremy Warmsley show, will probably tell echo such lofty sentiments. With the aid of full band accompaniment, the development of Warmsley’s particularly potent blend of classic song writing and electronica into a live ensemble of pianos, drums and horns is a must see.


Luckily both personas - whether broken down for a live setting or pieced together intricately on record - are hugely compelling. The public have thus far been treated to just four releases. November’s superb‘5 Interesting Lies’ EP came on Transgressive on the back of 200 runs of the initial release of ‘I Believe In The Way You Move’. EP number two ‘Other People Secrets’, followed in April, and the rather gorgeous ‘I Promise’ became Warmsley’s first chart eligible single in July. His debut LP, ‘The Art of Fiction’ compiles the best from a very handsome lot.


The gut feeling with someone like Jeremy Warmsley is that he is destined for a long and interesting career, and that album number six will be as important and utterly distinct as album number one. But for the moment, enjoy an in depth look at album one, and a peak at an up-the-sleeve album two in Crossthepond Podcast 8.
