Regardless of the plaudits Laura Groves is bound to receive in the coming years, Saturday September 16th is a date the 18 year old Yorkshire girl is unlikely to forget. It was the date of her first ever London show, and perhaps even the first ever time a first support act on a bill of eight has been demanded back for an encore. Every hushed soul present at the Hedges & Butler early that night were privileged to be watching a star in the making, so extraordinary was the talent on stage.
As soon as you’ve recovered from the stop-in-your-tracks nature of Laura Groves songs, deciphering her sound is a relatively easier task. She is Joanna Newsome minus the madness, Joni Mitchell minus the unsettling highest of high notes and every bit as instantly impressive as Regina Spektor was before she released her latest album.
The musicianship on the three demos currently available on MySpace defy the laws of bedroom recording. ‘I Am Leaving’, a song Jeremy Warmsley chose to play when he came into the Crossthepond studio, demonstrates these talents best. However it is only when you see Laura Groves live, that you can appreciate just how beautiful a voice she possesses. Notes that you’d expect to produce visible strain, are delivered with almost impossible ease.
Listen to Laura being interviewed on Crossthepond 11, listen to her songs on MySpace, and do so right now before the rest of the world find out about this most fascinating little secret.
Sounds a bit like: Everyone will say Regina and Joanna, but listen closer and Groves exudes pure Joni Mitchell brilliance.
